“HIV and Children” was written for parents of HIV+ children and details how children can be affected by HIV and by treatment. It includes a great table of medications used for treatment of HIV in children.
This is a short article that addresses how and why to disclose to children that they are HIV+. For many adoptive families, this becomes an issue as their young children get older. For others who adopt older children, it may not be as significant of an issue as the children may already know their status. It’s a good topic to consider ahead of time.
There are specific guidelines for how to best treat HIV+ children – the guidelines look at specifics such as viral load, age, and CD4 percentage and determine whether a particular child should be on treatment, whether treatment should be considered, or whether treatment should be postponed. These guidelines can be reviewed here.
